Senior Engineering Manager
Alaffia Health
New York, NY, USA
About Alaffia & Our Mission
Every year, U.S. health plans lose billions to improper payments and administrative waste. That wasted spending ultimately trickles down across the healthcare ecosystem, driving up costs for plans, providers, and patients alike. We’re here to change that paradigm.
Alaffia is a new kind of claims operations partner for health plans. Using expert clinicians and transparent AI, we deliver deeper insights, smarter automation, and consistently better outcomes across the entire lifecycle of claims. With Alaffia, health plans can cut wasted spending more effectively than ever — and provide their members the most affordable care.
We’re a high-growth, venture-backed Series B healthtech startup based in NYC and are actively scaling our company. Join us in helping to build a healthcare system that works better for everyone
*This position requires current authorization to work in the United States. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to sponsor work visas at this time.
About the Role
As Senior Engineering Manager for Product Engineering, you will lead a team of senior fullstack engineers building our core platform, a modern, AI-powered web application built on TypeScript, React, GraphQL, and PostgreSQL. You will be a force multiplier: setting technical direction, cultivating engineering excellence, and ensuring your team ships high-quality products with speed and confidence.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You won't just manage, you'll partner closely across the EPD org as well as with non-technical stakeholders to define roadmaps, drive architectural decisions, and help your team navigate the complexity of building in a fast-moving healthcare environment.
What You'll Do
Team Leadership & Growth
- Hire, retain, and develop a high-performing team of senior fullstack engineers, running effective 1:1s, performance reviews, and growth conversations while building a collaborative engineering culture with strong code review standards.
- Identify skill, process, and tooling gaps before they become blockers, and create an environment where engineers do their best work and grow their careers.
Technical Direction
- Partner with engineers on architectural decisions that enable scalability, maintainability, and extensibility, while maintaining a high bar for code quality, system design, testing, and operational readiness.
- Stay technically engaged enough to challenge assumptions, review designs, and unblock engineers — without micromanaging execution.
Cross-functional Execution
- Collaborate with Product, UX, AI, and Business teams to translate strategy into well-scoped engineering plans, owning delivery from planning through launch including dependency management and risk mitigation.
- Represent engineering in leadership discussions and communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders on timelines, tradeoffs, and progress.
Process & Culture
- Continuously improve developer efficiency through better tooling, documentation, and process, and champion best practices in observability, testing, and rollout strategy.
- Foster a culture of learning, pragmatic decision-making, and shipping with quality.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years in an engineering management role leading senior engineers.
- Strong technical background in fullstack development: hands-on experience with TypeScript, React, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, and Next.js or comparable modern stacks.
- Experience building and shipping SaaS products at a SaaS company, with a strong understanding of the product development lifecycle in that context.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams delivering complex, user-facing products in a production environment.
- Experience managing in a high-growth startup environment
- A track record of hiring and developing strong engineers and building healthy, high-performing teams.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills (i.e. you can translate between technical and business contexts with ease)
- Strong judgment on technical tradeoffs, architectural decisions, and when to move fast vs. slow down to get things right.
Nice to Have
- Experience in healthcare technology or other regulated industries (HIPAA familiarity a plus).
- Familiarity with AI/ML product development and deploying LLM-powered user-facing features.
- Experience with DevOps practices and cloud infrastructure on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Background as a senior individual contributor before moving into management.
Our Culture
Alaffia was born out of our founders’ personal connection to the inefficiency of the U.S. healthcare system. We are deeply mission-driven, with an abiding belief that technology can help create a better future for everyone — and we’re looking for others who share our passion for change to join in the team.
